Assignment #2: Alternative Assessment
Description: Alternative assessments are important for assessing the academic strengths and
weaknesses of students with autism spectrum disorders given their unique learning needs.
Creating alternative assessments are important for measuring student achievement.
Directions: Create an alternative assessment for a standard based assignment that may be
completed in a K-12 classroom.
Follow the steps outlined below:
1. Identify a task that measures students’ learning for an instructional objective in the K-12
setting. The task may be either a product or a performance.
2. List the Florida Standards, which correlate with the assignment you have chosen to design
and assess.
3. Include the instructions for students to complete the task.
4. Determine what alternative assessment method will be used to evaluate the task. The
assessment method may be holistic or analytic. Remember that holistic scoring gives little
or no feedback to students as to their weaknesses. Analytic can be used to give feedback
and is typically in the form of a checklist, rating scale, or a rubric.
5. Be prepared to justify your choice of method based on the feedback needed for students
and the purpose of the task.
6. Create the assessment instrument.
7. Evaluate the task using the instrument you created. The instrument should evaluate the
specific criteria established for the task.
8. Identify any accommodations and/or modifications needed for students with autism
spectrum disorders in evaluating student performance.
9. Create a remediation plan for the student who scored poorly on the assessment instrument.
10. Write a reflection on the assignment. Include the following:
– Why the assessment method was selected (holistic or analytic)
-In your narration, describe the accommodation, modification, and remediation
approaches selected and why.
– What did you learn from this assessment? How would you complete this task
differently the next time?
– What are the implications for classroom practice?
