Why are you in college?

This paper draws from the book Becoming a Learner and is an opportunity to reflect on what you hope to get out of your college experience and define your goals for being in college. It is okay if these ideas continue to morph and evolve, but your reflections are to reveal engagement with Sanders’ book. There is no need to use other outside sources for this paper, but you can refer to class discussions and exercises. Successful papers will demonstrate authentic responses and engagement with the ideas Sanders puts forth and not simply agreeing with him or writing what you believe the “right” answer might be.

Papers are to be approximately 500-750 words long and address the following questions and prompts:

  1. Why are you in college? What are your goals and ambitions? How do your goals align with the “why” or purpose of higher education, as that “why” or purpose is presented in Becoming a LearnerWho (not what) do you want to become as a result of your education, and what skills and habits will you need to develop in order to be successful personally, professionally, and in society? Please provide specific details and examples to support your responses. This section should be between 250-350 words.
  2. To develop the skills and habits that will enable you to be successful in college and beyond, you will need to be an intentional learner and engage yourself in the Rockford University learning community. Thinking in general, but also specifically reflecting on how your first several weeks of college have gone, what are your strongest abilities and how will they aid you in becoming part of this University learning community? What challenges do you face when it comes to successfully engaging in and out of the classroom? How do you plan to meet those challenges and what University resources will you use to help you? This section should be between 250-350 words.
