After reading The Crucible, which allegorizes the historical Salem witch hunts, Americans
have repeatedly invoked the phrase “witch hunt” to metaphorically describe
modern-day scapegoating and a “search and destroy” mentality. Even though the Salem
witch trials took place over 300 years ago, we are still using that term to describe efforts
to target various people or groups for people who need something to either blame or hate.
