Perhaps the most difficult adjustment for counselors and therapists from Western cultures is the adoption of a “systems” perspective because our personal experience in Western culture often tell us that we are autonomous individuals, capable of free and independent choice. Both solution-focused brief therapy and motivational interviewing emphasize viewing the client-as-expert, creating new stories, establishing a collaborative therapeutic relationship, discovering resources and strengths of the client, and separating the problem from the person.
