The second, parallel circuits, is wired alternatingly so that if a few bulbs go out, it won't shut off power to the rest.
Honestly, I've always had very simple lighting systems on and in my house. Typically, for the tree we just have it on a flash setting with a timer. For outside, usually, we just have constant lights that get turned off during the day and come on when it is dark, for me 6-7p.m. Eventually, I want to have a lightshow, I think that would be cool especially, taking inspiration from some of the videos I've seen with drones.
