What surprised me most about the talk was the discovery that the United States is the only country with such the strict justice system verdicts against children. I was surprised to discover that 13-year-old children are also subject to sentences with life without patrol, despite being juveniles. In addition, regarding the issue of death row, although I knew about it, I did not know about the significant risk of executing innocent people, whereby there is a chance of executing one innocent person out of nine. However, the country has not been so responsive to such discussions.
One of the changes Stevenson discusses that would help confront injustice is the process of speaking up against racial injustices in the criminal justice system. He posits that it is essential for Americans to be vocal and openly talk about the issue of race, which individuals rarely speak about. This is because minorities are the most affected by the injustices in the criminal justice system. According to him, people do not like to talk about history despite prevalent issues such as racial subordination and terrorism in the country's history.
The media and social media attention have significantly changed policing and race since 2012 when the talk was aired. Today, the uproar in the media and social media now creates significant attention around these issues and highlights the discrepancies, thus calling for more policy restructuring. One prevalent issue of policing and race that could evidence this claim is when a white policeman unjustly killed George Floyd and was captured on camera. This occurrence was aired worldwide and created attention as social media movements spoke up against the issue. Eventually, justice was served when the responsible policeman faced trial for his crime. Now, through social media and the overall media, the public is not afraid to speak up against racial injustices in the policing system.
Issues of race, poverty, and injustice are personal to me, and I am forced to think about them daily because they directly affect me and those around me. As a person from a minority group, these issues are personal, and I often think of when they will end and there will be more equality; even though I have not had a personal experience with them, I have friends who have been judged wrongly for being black in a store and accused of stealing because of their color. Issues like this inspire me to pursue equality even more.

I really appreciated how Mr. Stevenson weaved humor into his narrative, it made it easier to digest. I will say that it is hard to not hear about these topics in the year 2022. If you have a smartphone, you most likely hear about the racial conversation inside our country. Mr. Stevenson questions the validity of the death penalty. It seems as if he thinks that we should do away with the death penalty, or at least reduce it. He also asserts that we must challenge procedural law within the judicial system. He does not think a minor should be tried as an adult. He also proposes that we end life without parole for minors. I would say that we have become hyper-partisan since 2012. Our country cannot help but divide upon tribal lines. We will never be able to conclude this chapter in American history if we cannot make concessions. I would say that it is virtually impossible for these issues to be merely theoretical. Everyone has to reckon with their tribal identity. In order to overcome these issues we have to all direct ourselves to something that transcends our immutable characteristics. This is something particularly unique within the Christian tradition. Paul, in the book of Galatians, states that there is neither Jew nor Greek in Jesus Christ. This means, on a broad scale, that once people commit themselves to Christ their tribal identity will fall into the background, making way for a deeper identity that more truly reflects the essence of the individual, as well as the group.

1. I was aware of mass incarceration and that the United States has the largest incarceration rate. I was also aware that it is racially disproportionate, and that wealth plays a significant role in how people are convicted. My mom was a data analyst at a criminal justice resource center in OKC, so she reviewed many statistics surrounding these issues and would discuss them with me.
2. Stevenson states that truth and reconciliation are what a society needs to do to confront and prevent injustice. We must discuss and learn from our nation's history to unearth what is driving the injustices. The obstacle to the changes is having everyone realize that these injustices are their problems too. We must care about the issues of the poor and condemned and get involved in achieving justice even though it is challenging.
3. I don’t think there have been many changes to the United States prison system. Children can still be convicted and sentenced to life in prison, and only 29 states have laws about allowing parole. Prisons are still racially disproportionate, and we still have the death penalty.
4. I have been fortunate not to have experienced injustice because of my race or societal position. I am not forced to think about it every day and how it may affect my family or me though I do not believe anyone should be in a group that can choose to ignore these issues. It is hugely concerning how much the prison population has increased, and it will continue to do so if it is not recognized and met with action and compassion.
