A misconception is that needs are what we need to live and function and that wants are luxury items.

A need can be defined as the difference between your current and desired state. Wants are how we have learned to satisfy our needs. We need food but how do we satisfy that need?

There are a number of models that explain human needs. One is Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Others include Max Neef Theory of Needs and another is Murray's System of Needs. Have you ever heard of these?
