Dream Job Application and Preparation

Introduction

In a single paragraph, provide the reader with the key points you will be addressing in this assignment. The importance of identity theory and impression management need to be highlighted.

Part 1: Identity and Identity Theory

Explain a key identity that you have formed in life. Using identity theory (as explained in Brumbaugh-Johnson and Hull’s [2019] article), examine how that identity developed. Did your identity develop in line with their theory? If so, how, and if not, why not? Be sure to cite Brumbaugh-Johnson and Hull’s (2019) article, as well as any other Learning Resources from Week 3 that are helpful to your response.

Part 2: Dream Job Application and Preparation

(a) Imagine that you are applying for your dream job. Go to a career website (like UMGC’s Career quest [https://careerquest.umgc.edu/page/students], LinkedIn, or Indeed.com), and find an ad for your dream job (or close to it). It can require vastly more education and/or experience than what you currently have achieved, or it can be a job you would be able to apply for now. In a single paragraph, summarize the key points of information regarding the position that you think would be most relevant to this assignment.

(b) Address the following questions in 1-2 paragraphs. Would you want to display or hide your key identity in your application? If so, how, or if not, why not? In what other ways might you engage in impression management to increase the likelihood that you would be interviewed for this position? Would you make any changes to your social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, etc.) when applying for the position? If so, what would you do; if not, why not? If you don’t have any social media accounts, what advice would you give to someone on the job market who does? In your response, explain your reasons for your choices, using at least two Learning Resources from Week 4.

Part 3: Job Interview

You have an in-person interview with your potential new supervisor! In 2-3 paragraphs, using concepts of impression management, explain your strategies for success for presenting yourself as a top candidate.

Near the end of your interview, a mouse runs across the supervisor’s desk and the supervisor does not comment on it or react. What will you do? Explain your choice in light of what you have learned about impression management.

For this part, please use at least three Learning Resources from Week 4 to explain the basis for your strategies.

Part 4: Reflection and Conclusion

In a final thorough paragraph, explain what you learned from this assignment. Did it change your view about how you will approach future job applications and interviews? If so, how will you change your approach? If not, why not?

Part 5: Reference List

Your Reference list should include all the resources that you have cited in your Assignment. It should include Brumbaugh-Johnson and Hull’s (2019) article from Week 3 and at least 3 Learning Resources from Week 4.

Your assignment will be reviewed using Turnitin prior to being graded. For more information about the use of Turnitin in this course, please review the material in the syllabus.
