You may have heard the phrase, “first-world problems.” The connotation is that some problems would not exist without privilege or the benefits one culture may have. After all, if your culture exists in a socio-economic climate where basic necessities are difficult to attain, how would you view differently one’s obsessions over material objects? Would certain disorders be perceived or even present in certain cultures?
Remember that culture includes ethnicity and race and may be influenced by the socio-economic conditions of a given environment or other shared environmental factors. If something is not perceived as a problem, either due to relevance or perception about what constitutes “real” issues in a culture, it may be difficult to diagnose a client.
