Last week we discussed innovation policies that countries are promoting to encourage innovation. This week, let’s focus our discussion locally. Do a web search to find a city/county/state/regional economic development organization and look at how they promote job growth and innovation.
To start you off, I know many of you are located in Iowa, so I found the Iowa Economic Development Authority. I’m located in Colorado where we have the Office of Economic Development and International Trade. And I also found the economic development incentives for the City of Chicago. Choose a city/county/state/region where you are located or one that interests you. Find and discuss one or two programs, incentives, or other activities to encourage economic development. What is the goal of these programs? Is it just to add jobs to their community? Or are they looking to encourage and drive innovation? Finally, discuss any success stories you can find on their websites. How successful were they and how do they measure success?
