For this assignment, students will select one topic that is germane to Aging Policy and that has relevance to their field placement and/or professional goals. Students must submit their proposed topics (2-3 sentences is fine) along with a list of 2-3 references for approval by the course Instructor. This is during Module 6.
The assignment consists of a written paper that follow the guidelines outlined below. Each paper should also include at least 5-6 peer-reviewed articles.
Submit a 4-5 page double-spaced paper on a topic that interests you, related to understanding a social problem affecting older adults. You must also identify the social policy that directly pertains to this social problem.
The papers must include:
General description of the problem and how it is defined (i.e., developing a factual knowledge base about the social problem); (2-2.5 pages)
Who is affected by the problem? Describe the demographics of the social problem;
What is the evidence for its manifestation? How does recent research or governmental literature describe the consequences of this social problem?
Who are winners and losers in how this social problem is defined and/or manifested?
Identification of a state or federal policy that addresses this social problem. The policy must be an established policy and not something that is proposed or has not yet been enacted. (2-2.5 pages)
What is title/name of policy; when was it developed; what are the major element/mandates of the policy. Describe the federal branch AND local NJ agencies that oversee this problem and what their oversight consists of?
Briefly critique the adequacy of this policy.
What outcomes inform the effectiveness of the policy? How adequate are these outcomes or indicators?
Describe how social work training and experiences can inform can participate in the policy solution.
