Topic: Choose a topic related to an environmental problem that is of interest to you. The project should be focused on a specific area related to the general topic. To narrow the topic, ask what region, what population, what species, what chemical?
General topic examples include: biodiversity, climate change, deforestation, overfishing… There are hundreds of topics to choose from.
Written summary:
A brief 1-2 page written (typed) summary of the project
Include
Title
Introduction to topic
Response to the probing questions (See below)
At least five references (from scientific journals)
Formatting is open to the student’s discretion
Slides
5 slides (~5 minutes with questions at the end)
Slides should follow the written summary
Facts (and numbers) should be used over subjective statements
Presentation
The presentation should approximately ~5 minutes. Points may be deducted for significant differences in time.
The tone should be professional
Audience (students)
Attendance mandatory
Must be respectful and supportive of the speaker
Should ask reasonable and relevant questions of the speaker
Probing questions (these should provide the framework for the project) These should go on your slides.
1. How does the problem of interest relate to human activity?
2. How is the problem harmful to humans and/or the environment?
3. What are the scientific principles involved?
4. How is it measured? Can a plot be made to represent the problem?
5. What are the possible solutions to the problem?
