“The final written assignment is intended to demonstrate your ability to apply what you learned about the ombuds profession to a real-world situation and/or your own development of purpose, service or leadership in the field of conflict resolution. Your assignment should be 13-15 pages / 2500-3000 words (double spaced please) and may be in the form of:
An analysis of the application of the theory or practice of an ombuds to a current situation, event/conflict, or industry.
A comparative analysis of different models of ombuds programs.
(I prefer to mention both of them in the paper).
Tips and considerations:
Make sure you have a clear thesis statement and make sure that your thesis connects the dots, is supported by clear examples, evidence or research, and anticipates counterarguments. Your research should include relevant literature, and may include news, articles.
Does your conclusion offer a new perspective or insight, and match your thesis statement?
Do you want to inform? Explain? Persuade? Present an argument? Consider who your audience is and assume that they have a baseline of knowledge, but perhaps skeptical or want to learn something new. For example, if your topic is to advocate for a particular Ombuds model in a particular organization, consider that the audience is the general counsel and assume that they understand the basics of an ombuds program, but are resistant to the idea and need convincing.
