In later years state law was changed giving police officers the authority to make arrests in these matters without the cooperation of the victim.  I got to know some of these families very well, and I formulated several theories on why victims continue to reside in an abusive relationship.  

You may be acquainted with someone who is currently in an abusive relationship.  What would you recommend to them?  Why do you think some victims are reluctant to leave?  I've had students in previous classes who have shared their very personal experiences.  I have no doubt that all of you have very strong opinions on this subject.
