Portfolio of Foundation Competencies
Use the 2015 EPAS Foundation Social Work Competencies Download 2015 EPAS Foundation Social Work Competenciesto construct a portfolio. Using prior Bachelor’s-level social work assignments and/or professional social work experience, identify evidence that demonstrates your ability to apply each of the nine competencies to practice. This portfolio must be in APA format (i.e., using a 12pt Times New Roman font, double spaced lines, 0.5″ indented paragraphs, 1″ margins, and appropriate levels of APA headings). Include an APA 7th. edition title page, a description of the practice setting (i.e., micro, meso, or macro; population(s) served; mission or primary goals of the agency; services provided, etc.) and a description of the jobs or roles you practiced in that setting (i.e., assessment, case management services, information, referral, counseling, education, etc.) Then, address all of the following prompts:
Answer these items for every competency:
Describe a practice situation (i.e., a situation that required you to practice the competency), in your senior year field placement or work experience, where you practiced that competency (2 or more paragraphs; see note below).
Provide evidence demonstrating your ability to apply each competency to practice.
See the list below for portfolio evidence options.
If you are using a field journal, field evaluation, or another of the portfolio evidence options, make a copy and include that as an appendix. In your document, refer to the appendix (e.g., Appendix A is a copy of my field journal that describes how I met competencies 1, 3, 5, 7, and 8).
Describe how the evidence supports your mastery of that competency (1-2 paragraphs).
If you do not have access to evidence for a particular competency, you must answer an alternative prompt.
These alternative prompts are listed under each competency below.
Portfolio Evidence Options: Agency reports (i.e., strategic planning, program evaluation), reflection essay assignments, journals, academic papers/assignments, annotated bibliographies, research reports, case studies, case notes/assessments, grant proposals, policy analyses, program development plans, published documents (i.e., journal, newsletter or newspaper articles), community development projects, or written legislative testimony.
Alternative Prompts {only if you do not have evidence for a competency}
Competency 1: Demonstrate Ethical and Professional Behavior
Write a ½-1 page reflection on: the role of ethics in social work practice, how to manage personal and professional values, and what professionalism looks like (appearance, behavior, and communication)
Competency 2: Engage Diversity and Difference in Practice
Write a ½-1 page reflection on your own personal biases and the importance of diversity and different life experiences in practice at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels.
Competency 3: Advance Human Rights and Social, Economic, and Environmental Justice
Write a ½-1 page reflection about a time when you used your knowledge of social, economic, and environmental justice to advocate for human rights at the individual and system levels.
Competency 4: Engage In Practice-informed Research and Research-informed Practice
After being hired at a regional trauma treatment center, you realize that social workers are not using interventions supported by research when working with clients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In ½-1 page, describe how you would choose a new intervention model for agency use. Describe what you would need to do to change practice in that agency.
Competency 5: Engage in Policy Practice
Find and identify a current bill or policy at the local, state, and federal level that could impact well-being, service delivery, and access to social services for vulnerable populations. Write ½-1 page describing how you could engage with policy in practice.
Competency 6: Engage with Individuals, Families, Groups, Organizations, and Communities
Write a ½-1 page description of how you would use your understanding of human behavior and the social environment, person-in-environment, and other multidisciplinary theoretical frameworks to engage with clients.
Competency 7: Assess Individuals, Families, Groups, Organizations, and Communities
Write a ½-1 page description of the methods social workers use to assess individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. Describe any assessment methods you have used previously.
Competency 8: Intervene with Individuals, Families, Groups, Organizations, and Communities
In ½-1 page, describe what you have done (or what you would do) to provide interventions to individuals, families, groups, organizations, and/or communities. Also, describe how you chose that intervention.
Competency 9: Evaluate Practice with Individuals, Families, Groups, Organizations, and Communities
In ½-1 page, describe the importance of evaluating interventions provided to clients. Explain why evaluation is critical to social work practice.
Note:
As you look at the competency descriptions in the 2015 EPAS Foundation Social Work Competencies Download 2015 EPAS Foundation Social Work Competencies, you will notice that each competency includes a paragraph description and several bullet points (i.e., practice behaviors). Because each competency is complex, you only need to provide evidence that you demonstrated, or describe how you will practice (in the case of the alternative prompts listed below) one part of a complex sentence in the paragraph or in the bulleted points.
For example, a bulleted point (i.e., practice behavior) listed under competency 1 states: make ethical decisions by applying the standards of the NASW Code of Ethics, relevant laws and regulations, models for ethical decision-making, ethical conduct of research, and additional codes of ethics as appropriate to context. I recommend picking only one of the listed components of the statement (e.g., make ethical decisions by applying the standards of the NASW Code of Ethics). The requirement is that you write two paragraphs; however, you are not limited to two paragraphs.
