CSI Work-Related and Real-Life-Based Project: Case Study
Sexual assault evidence is fragile, and can quickly deteriorate and become contaminated. Therefore, it is important to know the methods that are used to collect and preserve sexual assault evidence. Read the following case, and answer the questions to review some of the concepts related to the collection and preservation of sexual assault evidence.
Case
A 30-year-old female who lives alone in a one-story apartment reported being raped. The victim made the following statements:
She was awakened during the night by a white male who was pulling the covers down near her feet. The perpetrator was wearing a red t-shirt, and had his pants and underwear pulled down around his ankles. The perpetrator has a short beard and long greasy black hair which smelled like smoke. During the rape the perpetrator grabbed the head board of the bed and used it as leverage to hold her in position under him. The perpetrator was perspiring heavily, and wiped his face on her pillow. She said she sleeps nude and that the perpetrator ejaculated inside her then rubbed his penis on her sheet when he withdrew.

Explain the various methods used to gather sexual assault evidence concentrating on trace, biological and fingerprint evidence.
Describe the precautions that should be taken when collecting and preserving sexual assault evidence.
Explain the importance of DNA evidence, and where that evidence might be found.
