Why did Ron perform as if he actually took the magic potion, when reality, he didn’t drink any magic potion at all? What made this placebo effect work?

Prompt

Stitch is an alien designed to destroy. If we had to put a label on things, Stitch probably exhibits signs of an antisocial personality. Take a moment to watch the video below.

Notice how Lilo (the girl in red) uses some behavioral techniques to modify Stitch’s behavior. We see this immediately in the first few seconds, when Lilo uses positive punishment. She uses a spray bottle (the addition of a stimulus) to wet Stitch each time he does something bad, in the hopes of reducing bad behavior. Yes, psychology IS everywhere!

Instruction

Imagine you are Lilo and you (unknowingly) adopt a pet alien designed to destroy everything in sight.

Other than the behavioral technique I just mentioned, what other psychotherapy tools would you use on Stitch? For this exercise, imagine you can have full conversations with your pet alien so you can use any psychotherapy technique you want.

Discuss your answers in 3-5 sentences. Be sure to identify the technique(s) you are using and which “school” of psychotherapy it comes from

Note: It is ok to combine different approaches! In fact, the most common form of psychotherapy is eclectic, which means that a therapist may use approaches from several schools of psychotherapy into their practice.

Sample submission (Do not use):

I would draw from behavioral techniques of CBT and apply operant conditioningto modify Stitch’s behaviors. For example, if Stitch does something bad, I will use a spray bottle to wet his face each time he acts up. In addition, I might use some non-directive play therapy to explore his inner mind. I can observe how and when Stitch will direct his destructive urges on to these toys. I may even ask him about the game he’s playing with the toys so I can understand what’s going on in his mind.————————————————————-

If you need, go back and watch that clip we saw earlier. We’re going to do a flipped-classroom activity.

Instructions

What do you think happened in that clip? Think like a psychologist and hypothesize possible reasons for the following:

Why did Ron perform as if he actually took the magic potion, when reality, he didn’t drink any magic potion at all? What made this placebo effect work?

Use your imagination: If you had to make this placebo effect STRONGER or WEAKER, what would you do/change/add?

Comment on another classmates’ response. Did you share similar ideas? Opposite ideas? Did they think of something you didn’t?——————————————————
