The SARA Model

SARA = Scanning, Analysis, Response and Assessment

Please review and complete both questions for the Case Study (p.106) at the end of Chapter 4. In this particular case, the Scanning and Analysis components of the model are presented for you. However, you may conduct additional research to further understand the problem.

  1. What possible responses might you develop for dealing with the problem (consider legislative responses as well as those related to law enforcement and public information)?
  2. What assessment strategies would you devise for measuring whether or not your responses have been effective?

Question #1 deals with the Response, which requires innovative suggestions that include legislative changes, police initiatives and community (public) engagement. To strengthen your suggestions, examine research on the problem to see what works, what does not, and what is promising.

Question #2 focuses on the Assessment component (hypothetical) which should incorporate elements of research methods in terms of measuring effectiveness – How will you know your strategies are working? How will you measure effectiveness? What outcomes will you consider in terms of effectiveness? Is it feasible to get the data? – among other issues.

Additional information on SARA is provided in our text (p.98), the SARA Model link in the Module and my PowerPoint: Problem Oriented Policing, Community Policing and SARA. This assignment requires students to conduct external research.
