In Progress
You are a social worker at a local homeless shelter that also offers long term housing for people experiencing homelessness. Your program is currently expanding housing units and eliminating shelter beds. You have been trained in harm reduction, de-escalation, and trauma informed care.
Ms. Tina is a white, transgender, 60-year old female. For the past 3 years, Ms. Tina has experienced homelessness. She sits in the same general area during all seasons, and community members frequently bring food, clothing, and other necessities. Ms. Tina became a danger to herself and others when her “camp” started impeding traffic. The local police department has asked your agency to assist with this need. Due to her age the community is very concerned about her ability to withstand another winter outside.
Other clients from the homeless shelter have mentioned that Ms. Tina doesn’t eat at any of the free places in town nor does she talk with any other people experiencing homelessness. Other clients often describe her as paranoid and share stories of her yelling at people who try to offer help. She is known to use meth and a chronic alcoholic.
The first day you approach Ms. Tina, she is sitting on a bench in front of McDonalds. As you are engaging her in a conversation, Ms. Tina begins to urinate and defecate on herself. She then begins to pace around the bench you are sitting on. You listen as she talks to herself and it appears that she utilizes multiple voices to hold a complex conversation with herself. She denies having any money, food stamps, access to healthcare or access to her mental health medications. She shares that she doesn’t want to be homeless anymore. What are the appropriate next steps for assisting with her complex medical, mental health, housing instability and imminent danger?
Write a 2 page journal that describes your thought process and rationale as you work through the generalist social work process. Address all of the following steps and any other pertinent theories or information you believe is relevant: engagement, assessment, intervention, and evaluation. Please cite in APA format the resources you utilize in this case study report.
Use the following questions as prompts, but you do not need to answer all of them:
Engage:
What approach would you take to connect with the client and/or others involved in the situation?
Who are the key members involved and affected?
Assess:
Based on the information and data provided, what are the top 1-2 areas of greatest priority and concern? Why?
Assess client’s strengths and limitations
What are the micro, mezzo, and macro systems affecting this situation and the client?
Intervene:
Based on your assessment, what are 1-2 interventions that you would recommend to address the main issues identified? Defend your intervention choice.
How can you negotiate, mediate, and advocate for this client?
Evaluate:
What data and information do you need to collect to determine whether or not the intervention was effective?
If the situation did not improve, what would your next step be to address the issues identified?
