“The Iceman Cometh,” “Death of a Salesman,” “Our Town” and “A Raisin in the Sun.”

Over the last few weeks, we’ve had the opportunity to read and respond to several of the most influential plays from the 20th century while grappling with how American artists create meaning and convey their observations about some of the deepest issues of their (and our!) time, issues such as social justice, racism, addiction, the delusion of chasing the “American Dream” and so on. In response to each play that we’ve read, we’ve asked ourselves:

· How does this play speak to our contemporary moment?

· Why does this play still matter?

· What artistic elements make this play a masterwork?

· How does this play make me feel about being an American today?

Each play has given us an opportunity to begin to position ourselves in the broader context of American literature, to become part of the ongoing ‘dialogue’. Now that we are at the end of the class, I’m curious as to what lingers most? What stands out the most to you? Of the plays we’ve read, what has inspired you and why?

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Take a moment to reflect on the course and all the various readings, voices, perspectives, ideas, reactions we’ve been exposed to. If it’s helpful, spend a moment skimming through the discussion posts and some of the conversations you’ve taken part in in response to “The Iceman Cometh,” “Death of a Salesman,” “Our Town” and “A Raisin in the Sun.”

2. In 1-2 paragraphs, share with us a bit about the play that most impacted you. What lingers most? What stands out? What has inspired you and why? How has this play changed/informed your view on American (dramatic) literature and the ways in which literature engages with society/reality? How does this play represent the various struggles that comprise our sense of American identity?

3. In another paragraph, reflect on this question: how have the plays that we’ve read — all by American authors at different points in American history — shifted your view on who  you are as an American and your unique American identity?

4. Are there any other parting thoughts you wish to share about the course, the readings or perhaps how this class has impacted you as a reader, writer or thinker?

5. Your initial post should consist of three well-developed, well-supported proofread and edited paragraphs.

6. Make use of no fewer than  two secondary sources.
