Critical thinking skills can be used in any situation. These skills help you make better decisions and solve problems. As an AGNP, critical thinking skills are vital for diagnosing patient conditions. But learning to think critically is not an easy task.
To improve critical thinking skills, we need to use actionable thinking exercises. Just like exercising the body, you should regularly exercise your mind to improve your thinking abilities. In addition, you can improve your critical thinking skills by reflecting on how these skills were or were not applied to previous patient encounters.
Assignment Guidelines
Choose a patient encounter from your previous nursing experience that was difficult to diagnose. Reflect on the critical thinking skills you may or may not have used on the case.
Prepare a one- to two-page paper summarizing the patient’s case and the critical thinking skills that you did or did not utilize on the case. Your paper should answer the following questions:
Did you use critical thinking on the selected patient case? If so, how did this assist in determining a diagnosis for the patient?
What critical thinking skills should you have used on the selected patient case? How would critical thinking have improved the outcome of the case?
*All references should be 3 years old or less, with the exception of the textbook used in the class.
