Discussion Questions:   Behavioral Therapy

(1) Identify the counseling theory that you selected to research.

(2) Identify the original theorist (i.e., who is given credit for developing this particular theory, counseling technique, etc.)? Tell us about him or her, including date and place of birth, etc. Give us a brief history lesson.

(3) What is the exact title of the primary article and the author that was cited in your research? Also provide the journal in which the article is located. (In other words, provide a reference — the other classmates and the instructor should be able to locate the article by following the information you're posting here).

(4) Discuss the basics of the theory AND the skills and techniques that are used in this type of therapy / counseling.

(5) What makes this particular counseling approach successful in the field of addictions (i.e., why is it effective in counseling clients and/or families who have been diagnosed with addictive disorders)? What are the possible limitations of this therapy (i.e., when might this type of therapy not be useful when counseling clients and/or families diagnosed with addictive disorders)? Are there any particular type of addictions (substances or processes) in which this therapy is currently used? For example: When counseling clients with a gambling addiction? 

(6) Identify and discuss at least one NEW concept or idea that you discovered during your research. Share with the rest of the class: the concept, definition, significance as it relates to counseling clients and/or their families, etc. Why is this new concept or idea meaningful to you? (A response such as, "I didn't really learn anything new" is not an adequate response for this question).

(7) After having completed your research, do you have any lingering questions or concerns regarding the theory, theorist, skills / techniques? What are they? (A response such as, "I don't have any questions, etc." is not an adequate response for this question).

(8) Respond to at least two other students' original discussion post. Remember to return to your original post and respond to questions and/or comments left at your original post by the instructor and other classmates.

Paragraphs should contain at least five sentences each (with the exception of question #3; remember, the bibliography/reference should be accurate and complete in APA; the instructor should be able to locate the primary research article by following the information in the cited source).
