It is important for you, as a counselor in training, to attend a culturally diverse event or experience to broaden your understanding and appreciation of different cultures, foster empathy and respect for individuals from diverse backgrounds, and develop the skills necessary to navigate an increasingly multicultural world.
For this assignment, you will need to attend an event, either in person or virtually, that focuses on a culture that you are not familiar with (this also includes events or experiences that you have not attended). Some examples of a cultural event or experience include culture specific festivals, church services, restaurants, ethnic grocery stores, etc.
After you attend a cultural event or experience, answer the following questions. Include a reflection of at least 250 words per response.
- What cultural event did you attend? What was the event? What was the atmosphere like?
- What did you notice about the way the people communicated verbally and nonverbally?
- How might the communication differences impact the counseling process with a client from this culture?
- How did this event impact your view on this culture?
