If implemented properly, electronic health records (EHRs) can transform the health care delivery system by providing health care practitioners with better data for patient care, strengthening patient safety with new automated tools, and establishing more efficient and effective processes. However, many issues in design, customization, interoperability, and use of EHRs could result in inefficiencies or workflow flaws. For example, EHRs fail to issue alerts about harmful medication interactions. Consequently, patient safety will be compromised.
