ASSIGNMENT OBJECTIVE
This assignment will help you explore implicit bias, understand its effects on healthcare (particularly nursing practice), and develop strategies to mitigate its influence. By completing this assignment, you will better understand your potential biases and learn how to ensure fair, equitable care for all patients.
WHAT IS IMPLICIT BIAS?
Implicit bias refers to unconscious attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions, and decisions without our awareness. These automatic biases are shaped by:
· Personal experiences
· Socialization processes
· Cultural environment
Unlike explicit bias (conscious prejudices), implicit bias operates below our awareness level, making it harder to detect and address.
HOW IMPLICIT BIAS AFFECTS HEALTHCARE?
In healthcare settings, implicit bias can manifest as:
1. Patient Assumptions: Making assumptions about patients’ behaviors or needs based on stereotypes.
Example: Assuming patients of certain backgrounds will be less compliant with treatment
2. Treatment Differences: Providing different levels of care or attention to patients based on unconscious biases.
3. Communication Barriers: Creating miscommunication or misunderstandings due to assumptions about a patient’s background or needs, leading to less effective care

Take Two IATs

b) Select and complete two IATs of your choice
c) Submit screenshots of your results (save as PDF)
PART 2: HAND-WRITTEN REFLECTION BASED ON YOUR IAT RESULTS (Use Template provided)
After completing your two IATs, reflect on your results by answering the following questions with approximately 5 sentences per question – MUST be handwritten & Reference page is typed per APA:
1. Define explicit bias and implicit bias in your own words.
2. Reflect on both tests and your results.
· Discuss your reaction to your IAT scores
· Explain whether the results surprised you and why
· Consider how these results might relate to your nursing practice
3. Can you think of a time when you or someone you know has experienced implicit biases?
· Connect this experience to what you learned from your IAT results.
4. How might those biases (revealed in your IAT results) affect the care you provide or receive?
· Consider specific nursing scenarios where these biases might emerge.
5. How does implicit bias impact health disparities?
· Relate your answer to the types of biases identified in your IATs
6. What actions should you take when you see implicit bias occurring in healthcare or realize you are engaging in implicit bias?
· Develop specific strategies based on your personal IAT findings.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
· Submit two screenshot PDFs of your IAT results (one for each test).
· Submit handwritten responses to all six reflection questions.
· Explicitly connect your reflection to your personal IAT results.
· Use proper grammar, spelling, and professional terminology.
