Review and engage with the Self-Care Manual by Kheir, et al. (2020); https://doc.rescue.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Self-Care-Manual-for-Front-Line-Workers-NMHP-ABAAD.pdfLinks to an external site. [Online PDF]. This self-care manual is one example of an intervention also known as a humanitarian effort to support front-line workers navigating ongoing stressors. Note the international lens and intention of its creation to intervene in violent and traumatic events.
Complete the two exercises on PDF p. 29 (Thought Diffusion and Let It Go) and the assessments (Appendix B, PDF p. 35-38, document p. 33-36). Include a copy of the assessments (e.g. attachment) with your uploaded written journal assignment.
The definition of self-care included within this manual will be the first of many terms this term introduced with a disclaimer noting the challenge in providing a unified meaning. With your knowledge of ‘self’ through the assessments and review of the material, begin to define self-care as you see it. What are the factors that are important to your definition and future development as a professional? Aim to name and explain 3-4.
What is your future professional role, job, career, identity? This will also be considered in the survey. How will self-care be important in this field? Name and explain at least 2-3 reasons.
Considering the concept of self-care as a “continuum,” identify and explain 3+ strategies for self-care that you currently use, and 2+ that you might want to add this term. In other words, which basic self-care needs am I taking care of, and which do I get to think about trying to enhance my current plan? Be sure to include your rationale or your “why” and cite as needed. (Kheir, et al., 2020, p. 13)
