The purpose of the film critique is to provide a real-life perspective to some of the health issues we are discussing in this course. You will be asked to critically reflect on this film and discuss the implications for women’s health.
Format guidelines include: 2 pages, 12 point font, Times New Roman, 1 inch margins, and double spaced.
Answer all questions and provide examples from the film to support your ideas.
Using outside sources is not required, however, if you chose to include a quote or material from another source you are expected to cite your source and use APA formatting. APA Formatting and Style Guide – Purdue Online Writing Lab (Links to an external site.).
It is very obvious (to the instructor) when students do not actually watch the film. Using cliff notes or other resources to write your critique is not permissible. You MUST take time to watch the film and share YOUR own thoughts.
Film Critique – The beauty myth: the culture of beauty, psychology, and the self with Naomi Wolf
In this film Naomi Wolf presents the relationship between ‘beauty’ and female identity. She goes over the historical underpinnings setting the stage for her thesis. She then explains the political, social, and psychological implications of the concept of ‘beauty’.

Please answer all of the following questions in your film critique:
1. What are some of the potential physical and mental effects on girls and women who try to live up to our culture’s ideal of beauty (“the beauty myth”)?
2. Name the 3 industries Naomi mentioned as being responsible for women’s preoccupation with their image. Choose one industry and describe how it defines women’s perception of beauty.
3. Do you think this “beauty myth” affects every race/ethnicity in the same way/degree? Please explain.
