Imagine you have taken a role of intrepid scholar/historian intent on furthering the knowledge of Axum.
What questions you would propose to answer in order to transform our understanding of Axum. What
sources you would seek to discover in order to answer those questions. You might want to think about, if
Arabian, Persian, or Indian source offers a counterbalance to the Christian Mediterranean sources?
Building off of Documents in chapter 6 (“Axum and the World “) examine rise and the significance,
connections “with the world beyond its borders’, legacy of Axum. What kinds of written documents might
still be uncovered in modern Ethiopia? What types of sources would be most welcomed by scholars? Are
written documents the most likely source of new discoveries, or could an image or other archeological site
be found. Use your imagination to uncover “the answers” and better understand the possibilities and
problems associated with primary sources.
