Superheroes and Superheroines Watch any of the Marvel Universe films or television shows. There are several available on Netflix and other streaming services. While watching, pay particular attention to two of the major factors we covered when it comes to identity: race and ethnicity, and gender and sexuality. Ask yourself how men, women, and nonbinary people are portrayed in the media you chose. Then ask yourself how people of different ethnicities, nationalities, and backgrounds are portrayed. Write a paper discussing these portrayals. Are women/men placed in more traditional roles in the film/TV show you selected? Or do they appear to go against our conventional ideas about how different genders are supposed to look/act/think? Are people of color and white Europeans/Americans portrayed as being equal or unequal? How might a characters gender and ethnicity interact? What do you think the role of popular culture (movies, TV, music, etc.) is in challenging or maintaining our potentially ethnocentric concepts of gender and ethnicity? Be sure to connect this assignment back to what we discussed for this unit (in the lecture/PowerPoint, the article(s) in Conformity and Conflict, and the optional chapters in the online text). Be specific. Use key terms, concepts, and ideas from the class sources. Your assignment should be approximately two pages in length (double spaced).
