Primary Source Analyses

Your assignment is to read the primary source that is assigned for each chapter, and then to write an essay explaining what it says, and why it is

significant. Each essay is to be a minimum of 300 words. There is no maximum. Please note that 300 words is a minimum and doing the minimum

amount of work will not necessarily earn you an A for the essay, so please be complete in your writing.

You will need to be careful in the format of your primary source analyses. Follow the traditional introduction/body/conclusion style that is standard in most writing. Your introductory paragraph should not only let the reader know the topic, but also contain a thesis. The body of your essay should give the reader an understanding of the primary source itself, as well as contain a strong analysis. Explain what you read, why it is important, but
look at it with a critical eye. What can we learn from each primary source? Why is it important? How do you know it is important? Do you detect  any biases that might alter the accuracy of what is being written? Studying history is about the interpretation of data, and it is your job to interpret
these primary sources. Do not overestimate the importance of a primary source. The analysis should be the bulk of your essay. Your conclusion
should be a short paragraph that simply provides a brief summary. Also, please note that grammar and spelling do count. You will lose a lot of
points if your essays have grammar and spelling problems. These should read like college level scholarly essays
