Consider the creation of a positionality statement as an opportunity to acknowledge your position or identity in relation to the work that youre doing, and also to provide some additional relevant information that helps others to see how you may understand and interpret the world.
If needed, review these short videos and reading, for more informational about positionality and positionality statements.
Now, compose a 5 paragraph, 2 page positionality statement in which you address the following: Race- black/hispanic, language-english, gender- female, social class-middle class, ability- able-bodied, Sexuality- hetersexual, religion- christian
Paragraphs 1-2: Describe who you are based on BOTH how you see yourself and how society and people in society see you. Be sure to identify at least the following identity markers that have a very significant impact on how you experience school in this country: race, language, gender, social class, ability, sexuality, culture.
Paragraphs 2-3: Describe the ways you are both an insider and an outsider in relation to your educational journey thus far. Include a discussion of systems and structures in place that have positioned you as an outsider and insider. Revisit Kimberle Crenshaws videos (week 3) on Intersectionality to help you with this. Also include a brief discussion of how you think your educational journey may have been different if society and people in society saw/see you different from the way it does, or if your insider/outsider status were different. Finally, connect your insider and outsider status to your schooling experiences in terms of access and power. Provide examples of how your insider status afforded you power to have access to experiences and supports, and how your outsider status may have limited your power to have access to experiences and supports.
Paragraph 5: Describe at least 3 beliefs or perspectives you hold about the historical, social, cultural, and economic factors that influence childrens schooling experiences today. Only 1 belief can be focused on the economic factor. For each belief elaborate on how your own schooling experience contributes to or challenges this belief.
