Meryl McMasteris a Canadian artist based in the city of Ottawa. Her work is predominantly photography based, incorporating the production of props, sculptural garments and performance forming a synergy that transports the viewer out of the ordinary and into a space of contemplation and introspection. In terms of the relationship between her work and our class themes, I particularly recommend looking at her series’ As Immense as the Sky” and Second Self for examples of using dramatic theatrical and photographic tactics in the service of identity portraits.

Wes Naman is a portrait photographer born in Albuquerque New Mexico in 1975.He is best known for the use of cello tape and rubber bands to distort the look of somebody’s face. His photographs distort and alter the appearance of face to challenge the idea of the ‘perfect’ portrait. In terms of this class, I recommend especially the  Tape Series and Rubber-Band Series.

Cao Fei (b. 1978, Guangzhou) is one of the most innovative young Chinese artists to have emerged on the international scene. Currently living in Beijing, she mixes social commentary, popular aesthetics, references to Surrealism, and documentary conventions in her films and installations. Her works reflect on the rapid and chaotic changes that are occurring in Chinese society today. In reference to our themes this week, I especially recommend  Cosplayers and other works from the Photography section of her website.

Discussion Question

For the discussion this week, I want us to think of specific ways in which McMaster, Naman, and Fei use performance in their work. Because it’s not “regular” life it might seem somewhat eccentric, but there is method to this quirky approach to making pictures. Pick at least one image from at least two of these artists and discuss the specifics of what they have done. How are these images different from other images by the artists? How are they similar? How does the artist use performance (or eccentricity) to propose, provoke, or imagine a world not reducible to the literal tendencies of the camera?

To get full points for your answer, you need to (1) make mention of at least two of these artists and discuss your thoughts on their work, (2) refer to at least one specific artwork (by name) for each artist, and (3) spell their names correctly. Suggested length: 250-300 words.
