 Ecologists sometimesummarize what we have learned with this statement: “Biomes are determined by climate,but Communities are determined by interactions and historical accidents.” Inother words, the “kinds” of life someplace are determined by theparticular climatic conditions of the region, but the specific species aredetermined by interactions between species and historical events such asevolution, continental drift, even storms and fires. For example, the Saharaand the Sonoran are both deserts because at the latitudes where they are theclimatic conditions are hot and dry and they types of plants that live in eachdesert appear similar. However, the specific species that are found there arequite different – there are no saguaro cacti in the Sahara for example!
