Loewen’s Reflection Paper

Thenumber one thing to keep in mind is that this is a reflection. That means youare writing about your thoughts on Loewens text. Everyone will focus ondifferent aspects. Just remember, you need to make this a structured formalreflection that meets the content requirements below and demonstrates you readthe full book.

Allformal academic writing conventions apply. References to any texts require aproper citation in APA format. All writing components are important. I amrequiring page numbers for all in-text citations. If you use other texts tosupport your ideas, you will also need a reference page. If you only referenceLoewen inside your paper, no reference page is required. As with every essay, youneed an introductory paragraph, strong body paragraphs, and a solid conclusion. The difficulty with reflective writing is that you know what you are thinking, because it is your reflection. You need to make your thoughts clear to yourreaders.

Thereare two things I would like for you to address in this reflection. You mayaddress them in any order you deem appropriate. You are strongly encouraged touse APA headings to make your sections clearly identifiable. Pay attention tothe point distribution on the rubric. This is not a 50/50 split in content.

1)   LoewensConclusions: Consider Loewens overall argument. Do you agree/disagree withLoewens conclusions? Be specific and thoroughly explain what youagree/disagree with and why you are taking that position. (This is how youprove you read and understood the entire book, instead of reading a fewchapters.) No one is expected to fully agree with him, but if you do that isok. Do not get bogged down in the details. They are there to help you see he isright. Focus on his bigger arguments about why this is happening.

2)   PreparingStudents: Loewen writes about secondary classroomsfilled with misinformation from books and teachers. What do you think you cando to help your elementary level students prepare for this? How do you thinkyou can prepare elementary level students to be critical enough to see issuesin history and be strong enough to ask questions of their teachers and theirtextbooks? (This should be the longest section of the paper with specificexamples and ideas fully explained.)

As a cautionary reminder, you are to read andwrite about Loewens book, not the adapted childrens version by RebeccaStefoff. There is a copy of Loewens book in Blackboard under Required Texts. You are welcome to buy your own version, just do not buy Stefoffs for thispaper.
