African American Vernacular Traditions

After you have completed your annotated bibliography, you should have developed a research question that has to do with one of the topics posted earlier, in connection with Song of Solomon:

African American Vernacular Traditions: oral histories, folktales, songs and ring rhymes, riddles, the dozens (a verbal competition of insults);

Gender Identity and Gender Construction;

Black Migration, including the forced migration of enslaved peoples from Africa to the Americas during the slave trade and also voluntary migration in terms of escapes from slavery and the huge mass of people who moved from the South to northern cities during the Great Migration.

You will write a 800-1000 word paper that:

develops a strong, arguable thesis statement about Song of Solomon;

uses quotations from Song of Solomon to support that thesis statement;

uses the 2 secondary sources from your annotated bibliography to support or develop your thesis or provide counterarguments.

Please use the same formatting guidelines that we’ve been using all semester, including the inclusion of a Works Cited Page.
