15 Aug Annotation assignment
First, refer to the Hanif Abdurraqib folder in Unit 4 & choose a poem to respond to. Then, read & complete the following:
For this class, the purpose of a general annotation is to distinguish how you comprehend, feel for, and connect with the poetry that you are reading. There are no wrong answers; rather, annotations are open-ended. You should respond to the poem(s) by discussing your initial reaction, sharing a personal relation, discussing what the poem means to you individually, pointing out the importance of a line, stanza, or message, etc. You are also allowed to disagree with the poem’s impact or message, but make sure you back up that judgment with a strong explanation. The aim here is to explain yourself in detail: move beyond vague ideas like, “I like/dislike this poem,” “This poem is good/bad,” etc. Be specific, honest, and elaborate.
If you wish to respond creatively, you may also write a poem in the poet’s style or using the poet’s topic(s) of choice. However, creative annotations should still include at least two paragraphs explaining why you were moved to write, how you decided upon the structure of your inspired poem, and what you felt about the original poet’s style and writing choices. (This is a technical writing course, after all!)
Requirements:
- Use proper MLA formatting
- Aim for approximately 2 pages in length
- Break your writing into cohesive paragraphs (an intro, a few body paragraphs, and a conclusion)
- Include an MLA Works Cited page with a properly formatted citation for your chosen poem(s)
