This documentary highlights falsehoods and political factors behind the incarceration of Japanese American citizens during World War II.  Over 120,000 Japanese Americans held in 10 internment camps located in Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho and Wyoming between 1942 and 1945.  This documentary also makes connections to similar situations where groups are targeted for mistreatment by the federal government.

Assignment 7

The film opens with comments made by Joseph Tsuboi, who says:  “The first time I remember learning about incarceration was during my 11th grade U.S. history course and I remember my history teacher was trying to weigh both sides.  So why could it be justified that it happened and why it was viewed as problematic, and I think I was really frustrated because she didn’t say it was wrong.”

  • How did falsehoods and politics upend the daily lives of Japanese Americans during WWII?
  • Are their “two sides” to forced internment of Japanese Americans?  Explain.

Your response should be about 1-2 pages in length.
