Word count

Aim of assessment

The purpose of this assessment is to enable students todemonstrate:

 1. an understandingof the risk factors, pathophysiology and treatment of type 1 and type 2diabetes.

2. an understanding of the relationship between thepathophysiology of type 2 diabetes and the non-pharmacological treatment oftype 2 diabetes.

3. an understanding of the impact of chronic complicationsof type 2 diabetes on the individual.

4. an evaluation of relevant literature to support anunderstanding of type 1 and type 2 diabetes and express this in a clear andsuccinct writing style.

Dave is 39 years old. He visited his local doctor afterexperiencing vision problems whilst driving. He has been unusually tired andurinating at night.

Health history: Gastro oesophageal reflux disease, Tibialfracture (Right) aged 24 years – motorbike accident

Family history: Daves father was diagnosed with type 2diabetes at the age of 50 years

Observations:

Blood pressure 150/90

  Heart rate 105beats per minute

Body mass index 32

– obese

Blurred vision with blue

-yellow colour loss

Random venous blood glucose level – 25.0 mmol/L

 

 

Diagnosis: Type 2 diabetes

 Referrals:  ophthalmologist, endocrinologist, diabeteseducator, dietitian, exercise physiologist

4. Discuss the relationship between type 2 diabetes and depression.Support your answer with academic references. (20 marks)

The Diabetes Australia website and patient informationsheets are examples of consumer (general public) resources and are notconsidered academic references. Official reports published by DiabetesAustralia for health professionals are academic references.

  High qualityacademic references are current (within 5 years) and specifically relevant tothe case study. The assessment must comply with the following:

Students must respond using academic writing – using fullsentences and paragraphs.

  An introduction andconclusion are NOT required.

Label each section using numbers – 1, 2, 3, 4. Referencing must be presented in APA 7.

Every answer should have in-text references. In-textreferences should be throughout the answer and not only at the end of a wholeparagraph.

The reference list begins on a new page with the title,References. References are listed in alphabetical order based on the firstauthors surname.

A hanging indent is required in the reference list afterthe first line of each reference.

The title of text books and the name of the journal andvolume is in italics.

Every in-text reference must match with a reference in thereference list.

Only references used in the in-text references shouldappear in the reference list.

 All assignments areto be typed. Typing must be according to the following format:

3 cm left and right margins, double spaced

Font: Arial or Times New Roman 9

  Font size: 12pt
