Policy Brief

Write an issue brief that examines the high cost of prescription drugs in the United States. Your goal in framing the issue for your reader is to provide the most direct path to understanding the problem and be able to consider multiple perspectives (held by various stakeholders); and, possible interventions to consider a change to the status quo.
Seven sections must appear as headings in the paper.
  1. Executive summary (one page single spaced)
    1. Overview of the problem and proposed policy action.
  2. Issue Definition (one page single spaced)
    1. Define the problem.
    2. Explain why it is important.
  3. Context or History (two pages single spaced)
    1. Convince the reader that the problem is important, and that policy action is necessary.
    2. Use evidence and data to support your assertions.
    3. Who is impacted? Who has the influence to make a change?
  4. Stakeholders (three pages single spaced)
    1. Begin with information gleaned from your stakeholder analysis. Introduce all six stakeholders from your stakeholder matrix. Incorporate your matrix as a visual and provide narrative to explain the matrix. This should only be 1/3 of this section.
    2. Segue into focusing on the two stakeholders from your assessment narrative.  Use content from your assessment narrative. Transition to a discussion about interventions for each stakeholder. Content pertaining to these two stakeholders should constitute 2/3 of section.
  5. Recommendations (two pages single spaced)
    1. Pick one solution/intervention – for one of the two stakeholders – and support it with data, evidence, and the like gleaned from your research. There may be a political aspect to this section. Be clear.
  6. Trends (one page single spaced)
    1. Do some historical research on the topic and the solution that you have included in your brief. Locate a trend and make sure that the reader knows whether your source of information is biased. This section should not stand alone; rather, it should be fully integrated into the brief adding substance to substantiate the recommendation in the previous section. It also serves as your conclusion.
  7. References (one page APA format)
Issue brief should be single spaced, 12 pt. font, Times New Roman, one-inch margins, APA citations.  (See the above PDF attachments for the sample issue briefs).

Rebekah,

please see notes below.

first sentence has odd grammar issue?

Your executive summary, initially reads as a series of unconnected statemetns….needs a good refresh edit…

Not seeing citations for your statements or facts presented.

Please identify an audience.

I don’t understand the statement no outpatient drugs covered in Medicare… Part D?

Conduct some intense editing so you can remove a fair amount of redundancy.

I think you need a citation to state that the healthcare sector was moving smoothly?

For the stakeholder section….minimize all stakeholders other than Medicare Program and Drug Manufacturers.

In the Recommendations section, feel free to list out, provide alternative recommendations… but then be sure to choose one recommendation to dive into!
