Organizational Disaster Plan (DCOLE)

Emergencies happen and all businesses/organizations should have a plan in place to not only support the community but to assist their employees (Labrague et al., 2018). The University of Oklahoma (OU) has recognized this need and has a system in place to ensure that all faculty, staff, and students are aware of any threats on campus, this style of communicating at the OU campus is called emergency communication system (ECS). This system is also effective in reminding students during severe weather of shelter locations on campus. The utilize the cell phones that are currently on file for each student, faculty, and staff to ensure that the information is sent out quickly and efficiently. In the care management department, our system is similar but not as sophisticated, we each have a phone tree that is being utilized to disperse pertinent information in a disaster. The department starts the calls to the leaders of each team and then there are team leads that work together to gather information needed getting to the each and every patient is the primary goal. We have discussed events like tornados that destroy the medical records, the flash drives with all the records and forms that are needed if systems are down. Then a reporting system to ensure everyones safety.

When faced with an emergency the system must be well organized to ensure the information that is distributed is accurate and useful (Leider et al., 2017). Within time every human will encounter a situation that is deemed a disaster, and everyone should have a plan in place to ensure their safety. Patients are our most vulnerable and we as health care professionals need to be aware and ready to make sure that they have a plan in place to protect themselve. I am happy to be a part of a team that recognizes this and make sure that everyone knows their part.
