The Cold War era was a complex period in modern history. It followed the end of World War II with the Soviet occupation of Eastern Europe for the next 50 years. The Far East witnessed the Chinese Revolution and European decolonization. The period was marked by dozens of liberation movements throughout the world. The end of the Cold War brought liberation to Eastern Europe, but added uncertainly with the rise of international terrorism, globalization, environmental concerns, and an unprecedented movement of people migrating across the globe. A bright spot has been the global expansion of the gospel into the Global South.
Jesus understood that people were susceptible to loneliness and fear. In Matthew 23, he cried over Jerusalem, longing to gather its troubled people even as a hen gathers her chicks. It is a beautiful image of how God cares for us. In Matthew 6:25-34 Jesus tells us not to worry. As he takes care of the birds, he will also take care of us. In John 16:33 Jesus told us that we can have peace knowing that He has overcome the world. The world and our daily lives may be a place of uncertainly, but the Lord is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. When we can’t have peace in our circumstances, we can have peace in our Lord. It is in the certainty of His character that we can live without fear.
