Diagnosis in Clinical Mental Health Counseling
Gladding & Newsome (2014) discuss diagnosis as a function inherent to the role of the professional mental health counselor. With this role comes the responsibility to carry out diagnosing in an ethical and competent manner. Authors from multiple disciplines, including Kress et al. (2013), Phillips (2013), and Robertson & Walter (2007), address these issues of ethics and competency in making diagnostic decisions. Braun & Cox (2005) discuss the implications of managed care on case conceptualization and diagnostic decision making.
Based on these articles and other supplemental materials provided, text readings (Chapter 5), and personal experiences, discuss your views on case conceptualization and diagnosis. What ethical concerns do you see as salient related to this professional function? Outside of content knowledge of psychopathology, what specific competencies to you consider supportive of appropriate clinical diagnosis? What are your views regarding the influence of outside constituencies such as managed care organizations and systems on the diagnostic role and function of the clinical mental health counselor?
In addition to your main post, you must post two response posts to others in the class. Post #1 must be made by the end of the day (11:59 PM)on the Thursday prior to the posted Sunday due date. Response posts are due by 11:59 PM on Sunday.

For example, posting a response such as “I agree” or “Good point” is fine, but is not substantive enough to fulfill the requirement of the discussion. Post #1 should provide the students response the question or issue being posed. Posts #2 and #3 should be a response to or an extension of an existing post. Responses to existing posts must be delivered in a professional manner and be respectful of differing views and opinions regarding the topic at hand. Within these parameters, these types of responses may affirm or refute the ideas being posited on the forum. In the spirit of scholarship within a community of learners, postings should extend and expand the thoughts and ideas present in the existing discourse. The discussion forum will be monitored and moderated by the instructor. Students are encouraged to remain engaged and involved in the discussion beyond the required three posts.
