Write a 3 page essay (around 750 words) comparing and contrasting
“Those Winter Sundays” and “Digging”. Your essay should explore
the speakers’ reflections on their fathers, family similarities and
differences, and the lessons learned from their fathers. Be sure to
pay attention to the tone and language used in each poem.
To plan your paper, do the following:
1. Read and REREAD both poems.
2. Read the poems line by line and make notes to help you
understand the tone and language.
3. Paraphrase each poem (ie., write it in your own words).
4. Brainstorm similarities and dissimilarities.
5. Decide on a thesis.
6. Prepare a scratch outline.
7. Write your paper.
8. Proofread and edit at least twice.
