Evaluating a Writing Sample

Read the student writing sample that is attached at the bottom of these instructions.  Then, using the Six-Trait Writing Rubric, also attached below, evaluate this third-grade student’s ability to write.  Circle the blocks on the rubric that you believe correctly reflect the various aspects of the passage.  Then, compose a reflection in which  you address the following questions:

 

  1. Is this student writing on grade level?
  2. Which writing genre does this passage represent?
  3. What does the student’s writing tell you about his reading abilities?
  4. If this student were in your own classroom, what instructional goals and strategies would you use to further his writing development?
