Earthworks and Performance art are phenomena that defied commodification in that both were often ephemeral. They often could not be experienced in traditional context such as galleries and museums, and many times the works are only viewed in the form of documentation. Address the significance of this by addressing these prompts and questions:
- Cite and analyze some examples of works that you will only experience in the form of documentation (photographs, film, drawings).
- Can you think of examples of such art that failed to escape commodification? Why did this happen in the case(s) you cite?
