Human Evolution – Biology

Answer questions about Biology. I will have photos of the lesson and directions attached, as well as the questions copied right here.

Here are some video links from the lesson:

You are to answer the following questions in your own words. Please post the questions with your answers in the text box below to submit your work. Remember to use complete sentences, use proper grammar, and dont forget to proofread and spell check your work before submitting it. This may require additional internet research, so be sure to cite your sources.

Do not submit text that you have copied from sources, including websites. All of your work should be in your own words. Using copied text would be considered plagiarism.

1. Find out what Homo sapiens means and report your findings here.

2. Part of the problem with researching human evolution is that the human ego gets in the way. As a result, some otherwise artificial separations are made between genus or species groups. A great deal of emphasis has been placed on whether or not a hominid communicates using language. Do we think chimpanzees have the capacity to learn languages? Why or why not?

3. There are two species of gorilla (both of which are endangered, sadly), but both species have the same blood type. Find out what that blood type is and report your findings here. Does it surprise you that gorillas share a blood type with humans? Why or why not?

4. Find out about the genus Paranthropus, and briefly describe your findings here. (Be sure to mention what time period it lived in compared to the other hominid groups mentioned in the lesson, and whether or not we think it evolved from or into any of those groups.)

5. Some people mistakenly think that the link between humans and chimpanzees means that one evolved from the other. This is not the case. How would you explain why chimpanzees and humans have so much similar DNA to someone who had never taken this course?

Use complete sentences to define the following terms or phrases in your own words. (Not all the terms are in the lesson. Using a dictionary or outside site for help is fine, and sometimes necessary, but be sure to use your own words and cite your source!)

6. Neanderthal

7. Bipedal

8. Genus

9. Species

10. Sub-species (include an example)
