31 Aug Favorite Mathematician Project (Written Essay)
So, who is your favorite mathematician? Well, I want to hear about him or her. Pick anyone you want.
I would like a brief biography of your favorite mathematician. Find someone unique. Or, if you find someone well known, find out some little-known information about them. Give a little background (where they were born, where they went to school, etc.). Then tell a bit about what they did mathematically. In other words, why are they famous as a mathematician? Describe their legacy to the world of mathematics. Then tell something about them that people studying mathematicians may not know. For example, were they also a great composer? Were they the nephew/niece of George Washington? Something interesting. Because we all know that mathematicians are very interesting, right? DO NOT write about a mathematician and conclude they had no life outside math/school and were very boring, not interesting at all. If this is your conclusion, pick another mathematician.
This paper should be about 3-4 pages long, this is to say, it must have at least 3 pages of text (3-4 pages of text plus a cover sheet that includes your name (no mane on text sheets), 12pt font, double spaced, normal margins, and typed). I DO NOT WANT YOU TO COPY AND PASTE FROM A WEBSITE. You are free to find any information you can from books, journals, the internet, magazines, etc. YOU MUST USE AT LEAST TWO SOURCES FOR YOUR PAPER. However, you are to take this information and present it in your own words. Take what you find and interpret the mathematicians merits. Then, tell me why you think that person is interesting. I will expect you to provide me with your information sources.
These should be listed at the end of your paper.
You will be graded more on how much extra information you find on your mathematician and why you find them interesting than on how much you provide about their birthplace, parents names, and other generally known information about him or her
