This research paper compares cultural issues related to families in the United States to those of other countries. Students will choose a country other than their own and focus on the impact of the following factors:

 

1. Housing and geographic location

i. Describe the geographic location and housing of the population of the country you chose. Please include the population, the exact location, physical features of the country, available housing, materials of the houses, and other pertinent information.
ii. How does the information gather compare to that of the United States?

2. Religion

i. Describe the religion that makes up the country and how it impacts the people’s daily lives.

 

ii. How does the information gather compare to that of the United States?

3. Technology and mass media

i. Describe how the use and access to technology and mass media have affected families in this country.
ii. How does the information gather compare to that of the United States?

4. Family, socio-cultural beliefs, and values 

i. What are the socio-cultural beliefs and values of families in that country? Please include family systems such as gender roles, parenting, the elderly, traditions, and beliefs.
ii. How does the information gather compare to that of the United States?

5. Economics

i. Please describe the economy of the country. Please include the GDP; labor force; gross national income, unemployment, imports, and exports.
ii. How does the information gather compare to that of the United States?

6. Socio-political systems and structures

i. Describe the sociopolitical system and structures of the country. Please include the type of government, branches of government, elections, and appointments.

Students are expected to do research on the selected country and the information from the United States. In addition, students are expected to demonstrate understandings of the environmental factors and challenges related to the chosen country and how they affect families. 

 

The paper should:

✓ be a maximum of 5-6 pages and written in APA style (excluding title page and reference page).
✓ be double-spaced and includes a cover/title page which is not included in the number of pages.
✓ include running head and page numbers in the header.
✓ have reference page (this is not included in the number of pages). Sources could include books, journal articles, government reports, and reliable Internet sources (usually the .net, org, and country websites). NO WIKIPEDIA and NO ENTERTAINMENT MAGAZINE articles, nor POPULAR MEDIA (e.g., reality shows) should be cited as sources. Points will be deducted if students use these sources that are not credible.
✓ have at least one paragraph of each of the nine factors.
✓ include at least one paragraph (at least 4 to 5 sentences) for each of the nine factors. Students may incorporate information by interviewing someone from that country. Each section should include the subheading of the factors. Check the guidelines in the writing requirements. Students must use APA 7th edition style for citations and references citing sources, including interviews.
✓ Include a reflection on the similarities and differences between the U.S. and the selected country about family functioning.

PowerPoint Slides: 

Students will prepare a maximum of 20 PowerPoint slides (including the title PowerPoint slide and reference list slide) of your country project. Transfer all the information from the paper to the slides. Be concise and use bullet points. You may incorporate pictures in your slides. Include a map of the country at the slide for geographic location. Make sure that you cite sources in the PowerPoint slides using the 7th APA style as well. The reference list slide should also align with the 7th APA style. 

 

Grading criteria: TOTAL = 110 Points

 

Paper (70 Points) 

a. Complete write-up of the nine factors (3 points each) 27

b. Comparison to the U.S. based on the nine factors (3 points each) 27

c. Citation and referencing in APA style (cited sources within text, listed sources in the reference section, paraphrased instead of lifting the exact words from the source, APA formatting, used reliable and scholarly sources). 6

d. Writing quality (spelling, grammar, sentence construction, clarity and organization) 6

e. Followed the instructions for this assignment (formatting and no. of pages). 4
