In her presentation titled “The Urgency of Intersectionality” (available on Canvas) Professor Crenshaw speaks to the separate problems related to racism and sexism confronting a black woman named Emma.  Rather than thinking of her dilemma as separate and discrete problems related to institutional discrimination, Crenshaw proposes the concept of “intersectionality” to explain the dilemma in which Emma is immersed:

    • Intersectionality highlights the cumulative and complex ways that multiple forms of discrimination overlap and influence the lived experiences of marginalized individuals or groups. In this regard, there are “intersections” of race, class, and gender, where it is possible, for example, to account for and identify differences in the lived experiences of black lower-class women from white lower-class women.

In the one case of Emma discussed by Professor Crenshaw, Emma had to deal with the overlapping forces of racism and sexism.  The intersections of both forces complicated the lived experiences for Emma.

Paper 3

Identify and discuss how the intersections of race, class and gender shaped the lived experiences of Dalton Conley or bell hooks.  In writing your paper, while you should highlight and discuss examples, your paper should demonstrate an overall understanding of the book you select for this assignment.

    • First, in order to get your start your analysis, think about race, class and gender separately.  What role did race play in the lived experience of Conley or hooks?  What role did class play in the lived experience of Conley or hooks?  What role did gender play in the lived experience of Conley or hooks?
    • Second, in reference to intersectionality, which one of the three factors was the most influential?  For example, you could make the argument that race was the most important factor, as it also influenced how he/she experienced class and gender.  Be sure to develop and support an argument.

Your paper should be 3 to 4 pages in length (double-spaced please), and be sure to use appropriate font sizes, margins, etc.  Give your paper a title, and post it on Canvas by 11:59 PM on Saturday, August 21.   Be sure to give yourself time to proofread and to catch typos, problems with sentence structure, etc.  Also use appropriate font sizes and margins.  Papers posted after the due date will be considered late and mustbe submitted before when this assignment is scheduled to close on the following day.

  • Due by 11:59 PM on Saturday, August 21.
