This week in lectures and readings we are learning about immigration and generational tensions in immigrant communities. For your reading response, I want you to analyze our reading of Monica Sones Nisei Daughter. Focus on all we will have read so far, meaning through page 144 (end of chapter 7).
In her memoir, Sone talks about how challenging it was to establish her identity: “I found myself switching my personality back and forth daily like a chameleon. (Sone, Nisei Daughter, 22) For your response, this week, answer the following questions: how does Sone struggle with her identity, and what generational tensions do Sone show exist between immigrant parents and their children?
In your response, include in-text citations to your evidence at the end of your sentences, following this system: (Sone, Nisei Daughter, 85). You can also incorporate evidence to support your points from class lectures. Cite class lectures like this: (Terry, U.S. Empire)
Weekly responses need to be 12 pages typed (300500 words, double-spaced, 12 pt font). Upload your document as either a Word document or PDF. This response is due Friday, August 20 by midnight.
Your reading responses will be graded with the following rubric:
A range Response consists of 300-500 words, proofread, and grammatically correct sentences. You respond to all the questions in the response, generally with around 3-5 sentences for each question. Your responses indicate that you have completed the reading and have made connections between the materials. You produce insightful responses to the reading. Your thoughtful analysis demonstrates an effort on your part to think critically through the material when answering the weeks questions.
